Children Martial Arts

Although it may seem like a healthy way for your kids to release some energy, allowing participation by children in martial arts is not always a good decision. One mistake that parents make is to allow their children to participate in martial arts under the guise of "protecting themselves." The problem with this that a child who may be prone to be a "bully" may turn this around in his favor and become even more of a bully.

Martial art activities for kids are not intended as a legal way for them to fight and become a bully, but rather to enjoy the competitive nature of the martial arts. Though in some cases martial arts knowledge does allow one to defend themselves against danger, its real benefit is that of an endurance sport and team competition. To give a child any other impression of kids' martial arts is to do the sport an injustice. No matter in which of the martial arts your child participates, it's important that he understands that it is not about fighting or being a bully, but that it is a competitive sport like football, soccer, hockey, or any other sport that may come to mind. The difference is that within the martial arts, one can learn how to defend himself against others who may attempt to do him harm. However, that is not the focus of martial arts for children nor should it be.

For children who are not prone to fighting martial arts classes for kids can be a healthy change from ordinary sports activities. Endurance sports such as the martial arts can teach kids how to compete against their peers in a healthy way as well as learning how to overcome obstacles in order to win a coveted award. It's not just about getting a ball into a basket or making a goal; it's about using every part of your body in order to obtain that well-deserved victory. There is seldom team work involved, it's usually one on one, so it's up to the individual to make the right moves and do what is necessary to score a win for himself as an individual. Some children, and even adults, find the idea of a one on one sport less stressful than being responsible for the winnings of an entire team.

On the other hand, if your child is a bully because he has some unreleased energy that needs released, martial arts for kids may help him. It's important for the parents to know the reasons their child is a bully before considering allow him to compete in the martial arts. Remember, in martial arts his opponent is not going to be the smaller kids that he chooses to bully but someone on his level.
